Artist’s Studio Bloomsbury | 024

Location

Bloomsbury, London

Type

Artist Studio

Year

1995

Client

Sir Howard Hodgkin

The initial brief was to build a new wall within the existing studio and replace the leaking roof. The client commented that studios which feel good to work in are invariably ‘objets trouve,’ and we tried to create a similar sympathetic atmosphere in the new spaces. The new wall makes a private courtyard between two studios and the existing house where stairs and walkways are introduced to give access from the house and means of escape from the studio. The roof is made of translucent composite double-glazed panels to diffuse daylight and sunlight in the upper studio.
